The Xmas 2008 ecommerce boom
Posted by Rob on 17th Jan 2009 in The Internet
According to popular eRetail site IMRG, many online traders reported an increase in online sales as shoppers deserted the high street in favour of their web browsers. Online shoppers in the UK spent £4.67 billion during December 2008, most likely seeking bargains and saving money compared to High Street prices.
This is, of course, relevant news to anyone who runs an online shop, and probably a strong hint to those that are meaning to do it one day!
Not all retailers reported a significant rise in sales though, and many reported only “average” sales, or no increase on 2007. This could have been for many reasons, here’s a few;
- Not competitive on price
- Not providing the customer with the right information
- Lack of guaranteed delivery before 25th December
If you had a bumper Yule sales
...you should be pleased, we’re supposed to be in recession!
If you didn’t have bumper Yule sales
...your site may not be working as well as it could. Maybe it’s time to have a look at your site to see if there are any improvement opportunities;
- Is your site customer orientated?
- Do you provide useful advice for your customers?
- Are you making it easy to buy from you?
- Is your site secure and do you offer more than one payment method?
- Are you competitive on price and/or service?
Of course, optimising an ecommerce web site often requires a professional second opinion to spot any issues and room for improvement. The best advice is to contact a knowledgeable web designer who can offer expert advice and assistance.
