The trouble with Flash web sites

There are some amazing looking all Flash web sites around with superb graphics, neat animation and a polished look and feel to them. So why am I quoting to rebuild this site, replacing it with a conventional set of HTML pages?

The site in question is an all Flash site for a small business that provides a high quality “bespoke” tailoring service. They visit your home/office, measure you up, and make you a hand tailored swanky new suit that’ll be the envy of your friends.

Their plan was to use the web to bring in lots of new work, but it’s just not working for them and their business is starting to suffer.

So why is it not working?

  • No search engine listings! As the site is all in Flash effectively it only has one page, so there’s little chance they’ll be found
  • No opportunities to optimise pages for multiple key words and phrases
  • Poor “mystery meat” navigation that’s hard to find and understand
  • Little or no useful product information
  • Updates are expensive, requiring an expensive Flash designer even to change on word!

So what’s the solution

It’s simple really - rebuild the site using conventional HTML web pages, and this will give the business a fair chance to achieve what they originally set out to do. There will be many benefits for them:

  • All pages listed in search engines - more chances to be found
  • Ability to target multiple key words and phrases
  • Better, easier site navigation
  • Improve on-site product information
  • Cheaper to update and maintain

Flash is a wonderful tool but this example demonstrates the negative side when it’s misused - don’t fall into that trap!
