The evil side of SEO

I regularly get phone calls from SEO companies offering to “get my site to number #1 on Google” or “increase my traffic”, in fact I got one today that made me laugh, it went something like this:

SEO: Hello sir, I’m calling from [insert company name] and I’d like to tell you how we can help you improve your search engine rankings on Google
ME: OK, which version of Google are you talking about, google.com, google.co.uk…?
SEO: google.com sir
ME: Really? How did you find my details?
SEO: I found you on Google
ME: What page of search results?

pause…

SEO: Errr… at the bottom of page 1, but we can help you increase traffic
ME: Why do I need more traffic? I get plenty as it is
SEO: You can make more sales… do you run Adsense sir? high traffic can earn you extra income with ad clicks
ME: But my site is a business site, I don’t want adverts plastered all over it, that’s unprofessional

...bloody idiot!

These sort of calls tend to follow the same pattern and virtually every one like this comes from a person with an Indian/Bangladeshi accent. These people are just snake oil salesmen who do the rounds telephoning all and sundry hoping to make a sale and con the poor site owners out of some money.

If you get a call like this, just say NO!
