Is your web browser HTML5 friendly?
All good web designers everywhere will know about HTML5, the upcoming implementation of the HTML specification, or, in leyman’s terms, the code that’s used to create web pages.
HTML5 brings a lot of new features that developers can use to enhance the way that web page content is presented, including:
- The AUDIO tag - for embedding audio in a page, no need for the Flash browser addon
- The VIDEO tag - for embedding video in a page, no need for the Flash browser addon
- CANVAS tag - for drawing things like graphs and animations
- Geolocation - enables content to be served relative to your current location
All good stuff, but with developers chomping at the bit, we can’t widely offer these because web browsers aren’t up to scratch, yet at least.
Scores on the doors
So how do the current crop of Windows web browsers fare?
A new site http://www.html5test.com/ will measure your web browsers capabilities out of a possible 300 points. Here’s the results for mine:
- Safari 5.0 (windows) - 207/300
- Chrome 5.03 - 197/300
- Firefox 3.6.8 - 139/300
- Opera 10.5 - 129/300
- Internet Explorer 8 - 27/300
Unsurprisingly the “Webkit” based browsers, Safari and Chrome, fared quite well, but the big surprise was Opera which hasn’t implemented many HTML5 features yet. Needless to say the IE8 score simply indicates that it’s holding back progress on the web - I should add that the up and coming IE9 will have much improved HTML5 support.
