Finding a good domain name

If you’ve ever tried to find a good domain name you’ll know just how hard it is to get one that’s not already been snapped up. Even more frustrating is finding your ideal name takes you to a landing page with no proper site attached stating “this domain is for sale”.

So how do you find a decent domain name?

Accept the good ones are not available

The chances are you’ll never get the perfect one. If it’s for sale you could buy it from the seller, but the price is likely to be high and more than you’re prepared to spend - the better names usually command a 3 or 4 figure price.

Look for variations on a name

So food.com has already been taken but look for alternatives based on the word, for example foodstuff.com might be available - ideally the extra word you add would have some relevance to your business.

Try different domain extensions

If the .com or .co.uk are taken you could always try the many other extensions available. The IANA Root Zone Database has the full list.

Get your thesaurus out!

You might be amazed at the number of variations one word has associated with it and a thesaurus is an ideal tool for getting suggestions. For instance, look up the noun “food” and you’ll get a long list…

aliment, bite, board, bread, cheer, chow, comestible, cookery, cooking, cuisine, diet, drink, eatable, eats, entrée, fare, fast food, feed, fodder, foodstuff, goodies, grit, groceries, grub, handout, home cooking, keep, larder, meal, meat, menu, mess, moveable feast, nourishment, nutriment, nutrition, pabulum, provision, ration, refreshment, slop, snack, store, subsistence, support, sustenance, table, take out, tuck, viand, victual, vittles

A list like this can be very inspirational and give you some terrific combinations - foodboard.com, chowfood.com, dietfood.com, foodfare.com, foodlarder.com…

Don’t forget hyphens and numbers

Some people like them, others hate them, but hyphens and numbers can bring up even more naming choices. If foodboard.com is taken try food-board.com, or foodboard21.com, or any other combination you can put together.

Don’t delay - register today!

Searching for decent names using these tips can sometimes bring up some surprisingly good results very quickly. However, if you spot a suitable domain name consider registering it straight away, it might not be there tomorrow! Make a shortlist of possibilities before you do that domain availability search, with your preferred ones at the top of the list, and keep your credit card handy!
